Japanese media organization lodges protest with US AI firm

(MENAFN) A Japanese news agency has formally protested to a US-based artificial intelligence company over the "unauthorized" use of its articles, seeking immediate compensation.

In a letter sent to California-based Perplexity AI, Inc. (PAI), Kyodo News President Toshimitsu Sawai demanded that the startup "immediately" cease using articles published on the 47 News website and provide reparations for the alleged "damages." The agency also warned that legal action could follow if its demands are not met. There was no immediate response from the AI company.

"Kyodo News has confirmed that its distributed articles are being reproduced and used by PAI without any permission, and that PAI has repeatedly accessed the website titled '47 NEWS' which features articles created by Kyodo News hundreds of thousands of times over a period of approximately one year starting in August 2024," the letter stated.

The letter also accused PAI of generating content containing errors while citing Kyodo News’ name and articles, which "significantly damages the trust and brand value" of the Tokyo-based wire service. It argued that PAI’s actions violate the news agency’s reproduction rights and constitute "unfair competition" under Japanese law.

The correspondence further criticized PAI for repeatedly "free-riding" on these articles without paying license fees or royalties, calling this "unrestrained" copyright infringement a threat to the integrity of accurate reporting, which it described as a cornerstone of democracy.
