US Regulator Orders Early ABC License Renewals Amid Trump–Kimmel Feud

(MENAFN) The US communications regulator on Tuesday instructed several ABC-owned television stations to submit their license renewal applications within 30 days, increasing pressure on the network amid an ongoing political dispute involving President Donald Trump and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it is reviewing Disney’s ABC network over possible violations of the Communications Act of 1934, including rules related to unlawful discrimination, according to official statements.

Eight ABC-owned stations were ordered to file renewal paperwork by May 28, significantly earlier than their standard schedule.

Under normal procedures, ABC’s broadcast licenses operate on eight-year cycles and would not have been due for renewal until 2028. However, reports noted that the law includes a rarely used provision allowing regulators to require early renewal applications, which could potentially lead to refusal.

The move comes amid heightened political tensions following recent comments made by Jimmy Kimmel, who has been drawn into controversy over his remarks targeting political figures.

During a parody segment ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Kimmel joked about first lady Melania Trump, saying she had “a glow like an expectant widow.”

He later clarified that the comment was intended as humor related to the couple’s age difference, stating it was “the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am,” and rejecting interpretations that it was an incitement to violence.

The regulatory action and the broader controversy have unfolded alongside an intensifying public feud between Trump and the late-night host, further fueling debate over media regulation and political speech in the United States.
