Palestinian Syndicate Documents 55 Israeli Press Violations in May
"The Israeli occupation is pursuing a policy aimed at restricting the freedom of journalistic work and preventing journalists from performing their professional duty of conveying the truth and documenting violations on the ground," it said in a statement.
The documented violations spanned a wide range of abuses, including two journalists wounded by live fire while reporting in the field, two arbitrary arrests, and 30 instances of detention and deliberate obstruction of coverage. The syndicate additionally recorded five incidents of direct gunfire aimed at journalists and five attacks involving tear gas and stun grenades.
Further abuses catalogued included two cases of journalistic equipment being confiscated, two physical assaults on journalists, two instances of reporters being barred from covering events at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, one media outlet raided and forcibly shut down, one journalist brought before a court, and three cases of journalists being interrogated or summoned.
"These practices constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and international covenants related to freedom of opinion and expression, which guarantee the protection of journalists while performing their professional duties," the syndicate added.
The union cautioned that the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists represents "an increasing threat to press freedom and the public's right to access information," stressing that Israeli forces are deploying every available means to silence media operations.
It issued an urgent appeal to international human rights bodies, media organizations, and the United Nations to "assume their legal and moral responsibilities to pressure the occupying authorities to halt their ongoing violations against Palestinian journalists, hold the perpetrators accountable, and provide the necessary protection for media workers."
The May tally adds to an already alarming annual record — last month the syndicate revealed it had documented nearly 300 Israeli violations and attacks against its members since the start of 2026 alone.
The broader death toll underscores the magnitude of the crisis: at least 262 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 2023, with 261 of those deaths recorded in Gaza. Six additional reporters have lost their lives since the beginning of this year.
