Sacramento Increased Its Grass Conversion Rebate

The City of Sacramento normally offers incentives for converting grass into water-efficient landscaping, but the current program temporarily raises the available reimbursement to $2.50 per square foot.

Homeowners must apply the receive approval from the city before the work begins. The city also requires a pre-inspection before the landscape conversion starts and post-inspection after the project is complete. Projects that were already completed before enrollment do not qualify for reimbursement.

For single-family and duplex properties, eligible expenses can include drought0tolerant plants, mulch, weed barrier, irrigation materials, and up to $800 in labor from a licensed C-27 landscape contractor. The total reimbursement still cannot exceed the program’s $2.50 per-square-foot limit or the $5,000 residential maximum.

Multi-family, commercial, and institutional properties can qualify for larger projects, with rebates reaching up to $50,000 for eligible conversions.

A Qualifying Yard Needs More Than Less Grass

Homeowners can keep some existing grass if they still want an area for children, pets, or other uses. The Converted portion must meet the program requirements separately from the grass that remains.
