San José City College Charters Sigma Chi Eta Communication Honor Society Chapter
National Communication Association approves SJCC’s Chi Eta honor society chapter, with the first induction of communication students planned for spring 2027
SAN JOSE, CA, UNITED STATES, October 30, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- San José City College's Communication Studies and Mass Media Department has been approved to establish a Sigma Chi Eta chapter, the official community college honor society of the National Communication Association.
The NCA notified the college of its decision in a letter dated Oct. 27. Professor Guadalupe Alatorre submitted the application on the department's behalf.
"This is an exciting milestone for our Communication Studies and Mass Media Department and a wonderful opportunity for our students," Alatorre said.
The department plans to hold its first induction ceremony in spring 2027 to welcome the chapter's founding members. The chapter is open to communication studies and mass media majors as well as students interested in the field.
"Our faculty are always looking for new ways to help students succeed, and this chapter is a great example," said SJCC President Dr. Marilyn Flores. "Sigma Chi Eta will give communication students at San José City College a community of peers and a record of achievement they can carry with them to a four-year university or into their careers."
Alatorre said the honor society supports one of the department's ongoing goals: increasing the number of students who choose communication studies and mass media as their academic path and go on to earn an associate degree or certificate. She expects the chapter to recognize high-achieving students, strengthen their sense of belonging, and encourage them to stay engaged in the program.
"Beyond recognizing academic achievement, I hope this honor society will inspire students to become more involved in our department, explore leadership opportunities, build meaningful connections, and take pride in their academic accomplishments," Alatorre said.
Since 2000, Sigma Chi Eta has inducted outstanding communication students at two-year colleges and universities each year and helped them explore options for transferring to four-year colleges and universities or entering the workforce. Membership is for life, and the society encourages members to stay connected with their college, faculty, and fellow students in the discipline.
The society's goals include rewarding scholastic achievement, stimulating interest in the field of communication, and promoting professional development among communication majors. It also gives students a forum to exchange ideas about the field, builds closer relationships between faculty and students, and helps members explore further undergraduate and graduate study.
